Walls

Friend and friend, sister and sister, always by each other’s sides. A more loud and happy girl ran ahead, bashing through obstacles that lay in her path. Her smaller, worrying friend followed her.

The two had to get through tough walls and reach the end. The happy girl ran carelessly, bashing through the walls and sometimes leaping over them with ease. The smaller girl followed slowly behind, often worrying about the broken pieces of the wall. Feeling pity, the small girl even pushed the pieces near the wall for whom ever would fix it. If she had time and didn’t have to keep up with her sister, she would be the one to do so.

Eventually, the small girl fell behind. Her happy sister continued ahead, running and leaping endlessly. Scared that she might loose her companion, the little girl picked up her pace. She couldn’t bring her self to burst through the thick walls, so she scrambled over them.

Often falling over the walls, she fell behind more and more. Soon, she couldn’t catch sight of her sister. Climbing up another one of the walls, she gazed ahead. It was fog, clouding what lay ahead of her. No sight of her happy sister. She dropped over the wall and trudged to the next one.

Angry now that she couldn’t see her sister, she attempted to fire a punch at the wall. She heard her knuckles crack under the wall’s thick material, and pain shot up her arm. Crumbling to the floor, she clutched her hand as it throbbed. Annoyance and stubbornness clouded her thoughts and tears rose up to her eyes. Why hadn’t her sister noticed her absence? She would come back to get her, right? Right?

The little girl wiped her newly formed tears off with her spare hand, and stood up. Jumping onto the wall, she attempted to climb over it. Without the use of her injured, right hand, it made the climbing rather difficult. She slid back down to the floor in defeat. Her sister was most likely gone by now.

Before angry thoughts resurfaced, the wall she couldn’t pass exploded in front of her. She jumped backwards and landed on her behind. It was her sister! She had bashed through the wall! At first the little girl was thankful of the sight of her sister, but the cold gaze the bigger sister gave her told her that she didn’t feel the same.
“Where were you? Can’t you keep up?” The older friend demanded, hands on her hips. People the little girl didn’t recognize stood next to her. “I- I couldn’t keep up. I’m sorry.” She murmured, lifting her gaze to meet her sisters.

That’s when she realized that something was off. What had happened to her sister? Her once bright blonde hair was gray. Now looking at her fully, everyone in front of her were gray. Colorless, expect for their eyes. Her sister’s once vibrant blue eyes were dull red and filled with disappointment. Her bowtie she always proudly wore had vanished, and so had their best friend necklace. It was replaced with a gold engraved one.

Soon, a boy walked up to her big sister. “Come on, why waste your time with her?” He asked, putting his hand on her shoulder. To the little girl’s surprise, her friend shook her head. “No way. She comes with us.” She retorted.

But then the rest of the people around her began to complain. “But she worries so much! She can’t even bust through a wall! Why do you want her with us?” They all protested, in a one-tone voice laced with annoyance. The boy hugged her older sister from behind. “Do you even care about her?” He whispered, but the small girl could still hear him.

Her older friend took a long look at her, the piercing, different, red eyes making the smaller girl’s blood turn to ice. “You know what? No. I don’t. If she can’t keep up, then why have her with me?” She smirked, giving her little sister a look she had never seen before.

Not believing what she saw, she scrambled backwards. Tears spilled over her eyes. Why would she ever say something like that? Then the boy, the people, and her own sister advanced on her. The little girl, still on the ground, shuffled backwards. Her back hit the wall behind her. She had nowhere to go but to face them.

The little girl screeched and wailed, kicking and punching at them. But it was no use; the people over powered her easily. “You’re so stupid!” One laughed. “You worry so much and only yell!” One cackled in amusement. “You’re always so blunt and never support your friends. What’s wrong with you?” A familiar voice spat.

Pain flooded her body, and soon the world was sucked into darkness. The boy and people walked away, and her older sister stayed. She took one last look at her former friend, not one bit of remorse felt. The boy noticed her position and walked back next to her. He curled his hands around her waist as if they were little snakes, and smirked. “I don’t need her anymore.” Her older sister rasped.  Forcing saliva to her lips, she spat at the crippled body in front of her. The boy grinned widely, and the two walked away. They never looked back. Never batted an eyelash. Never cared.  Never worried.

Would you?

This is a story about two girls and their observer.

In the back, being as quiet as she could be, a girl with her invisibility cloak followed her two friends, looking around at their bright and colorful world. It was quite a beautiful sight, seeing how their friendship could create such shades.

And then they started to dull.

The girl with the invisibility cloak stared as she started to encounter broken walls. She noticed, just up ahead, the two sisters talking about something serious.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yeah…we can still keep in touch, though!”

The smaller of the two seemed a bit doubtful, but happy none the less that they would still keep in contact after the big sister left.

The girl with the invisibility cloak smiled a bit as she felt like everything would be okay. The two ahead of her continued on, and then it started to get worse.

The colors continued to dull.

And then she encountered walls.

The girl with the invisibility cloak followed a bit further behind them, wondering how they would break through these.

The bigger one took care of it with ease, smashing the wall.

The girl with the invisibility cloak watched with curiosity as the younger one started to push the pieces to the side, in a neat pile. Once she got further ahead, the girl with the invisibility cloak happily put the wall back together, glad to be of help.

And then things went downhill.

The girl with the invisibility cloak watched as the colors turned grey. Watched as the younger one hurt her hand and scrambled at the tall and thick walls, trying to get to her sister.

The girl with the invisibility cloak bristled with rage. Where was the older one?!
The younger one found her, finally.

The girl in the invisibility cloak flinched when she heard the tone of voice the older one was using.

The girl with the invisibility cloak watched in wonder and rage as the older’s tone affected the younger one in a negative.

How dare she.

The girl with the invisibility cloak was ready to speed up her own pace to the two of them, ready to give the older a piece of her mind.

Then, a boy came.
The boy screwed everything over.
The girl with the invisibility cloak froze, watching as the older sister and the pathetic boy and some others advanced on the younger.

They attacked, with words and emotions and everything they could throw.
The girl with the invisibility cloak was rooted to her spot.

The boy took the older one, leaving the younger behind, sad and alone, muttering apologies after the older one and begging her not to leave.

Why is she apologizing? She didn’t do anything.

The girl in the invisibility cloak ran up to the small body on the ground, standing next to her.

“Yo.” The girl in the invisibility cloak took off her hood, looking down at the girl below her.

The girl didn’t say a word, just looked up and waved a bit.

The girl in the invisibility cloak sat down next to her.

“This sucks, doesn’t it? I know it’s hard.” The girl in the invisibility cloak took the side of her cloak and wiped at some stray tears she had seen. “I know you want to go after her. I’m not going to stop you. I’m not going to let them hurt you anymore. I’m here to help you. I know you’re angry and sad and so much more…don’t listen to their words, friend. They didn’t know what they were saying.”

The girl with the invisibility cloak could only help that her words were getting to the younger sister.

“You’re not stupid. You’re amazing. You’re strong, and kind, and caring and wonderful…” The girl with the invisibility cloak continued. “And your worry? It shows how much you care. It shows how much you want everything to be okay. It’s admirable, actually. I wish I could be like you!” The girl with the invisibility cloak laughed a bit, putting her hand on the other girl’s shoulder. “You’re yelling helps. Bluntness is always better, rather than pushing around the bush, avoiding a subject. And that was a lie when they said you didn’t support your friends. You’ve supported me through so much crap, and you’ve supported the others, too. You do so much for us…” The girl with the invisibility cloak paused, standing up. “So now I’m gonna do this for you.” The girl with the invisibility cloak helped up the one on the ground, facing the road ahead of them.
“So, Shall we fix this?”

~

“I think we shall.” The smaller girl nodded, newfound determination sparkling in her hazel eyes. “I’ll take care of this.” The hooded girl stated, flipping her cloak over her head. She started forward, to find the other girl.

The smaller girl sat back down, and began to wait. She had faith in the hooded friend. Curling up on the floor, she attempted to sleep. Tossing and turning, she couldn’t get comfortable. Anxiety nagged at her, forcing her to stay awake. So the little girl sat there and waited.

And waited.

To make herself useful, she began to wrap her wounds. The various bruises the people gave her laced her arms and torso. With stinging memory, she remembered that her sister was also a part of those people. Shoving the thought away, she finished wrapping.

Finally, the hooded girl and her sister were in eyesight. The boy had vanished and so had the other people once with her. The little girl, now anxious and nervous, stood up. The hooded friend had a smile, which filled the small girl from head to toe with relief. Had she done it?

Her sister stood there for a moment, and then locked eye contact with her younger sister. “I’m sorry. I realized that you probably have never heard me say that to you, but its true. I’m sorry you always talk about you being the worst sister ever, but you’re not. I’m not either. So, I’m sorry. Sorry for getting in more fights than happy moments.”

Disbelief washed over the younger sister. Was this really happening? Tears formed at her eyes and soon spilled over. She leaped into her sister’s arms, crying tears of joy.

Color flooded into the universe, and her sister’s bowtie and necklace materialized back to normal. “I have her back! Finally!” The younger sister thought happily. “Let’s fix that. Let’s make more happy moments than fights.” She said, breaking from the hug and wiping the tears away from her eyes with her newly wrapped hand.

The little girl looked around for the hooded friend, but she was nowhere to be found. Most likely covered by her invisibility cloak. Smiling, she looked around once more and turned to face her older sister. The urge to grab her older sister’s hand and walk away together became overwhelming, but she settled with just walking next to her. Friend and friend, sister and sister, walked home by each other’s sides, with the cloaked girl watching from afar with a content grin.
